Replace or repair your camera?

I remember the times when we had a film camera, it served our family for over ten years and we don’t have to worry about upgrading it, we took it to a camera repair shop several times but it was still good to use. Now, in the age of digital cameras, digicams become obsolete as manufacturers try to make a better model each year. 3 years ago, I bought a 5 megapixel digital camera from Canon. It’s a mid-priced digital camera but as resolutions get higher and higher, a 5 megapixel digital camera seems obsolete, considering that most mid-ranged mobile phones sport a 5 megapixel camera too.

So the question of whether to repair or replace your digital camera is a bit tricky. I for one, would probably opt for the replace option as digital cameras become cheaper but of course, it all boils down to the problem of your digital camera. An officemate of mine went to a digital camera repair shop because her Canon camera LCD won’t work. The shop quoted her about ¼ of the original price of her digital camera. It was pretty expensive but it was a good thing that the same camera’s price was still the same when she bought hers, so the natural course would be to just replace the LCD.

Now it seems that Canon camera repair is easy for the same shop, maybe because they have ready parts on hand but when my sister’s Sony digital camera lens was the problem, the price quoted her was more than ½ of the original price and buying a new one with the same model would’ve cost her just a few dollars more.

So when choosing between repairing a camera or just buying a new one, compare the price of repairing it with the price of just buying a new one, but of course, there’s no price that can be put on sentimental value.

Is the Sony a NEX series a digital SLR?

I was mesmerized when the Sony a NEX-5 and NEX-3 were announced. Initially, I thought they were the most compact digital-SLR cameras but I was mistaken. The Sony a NEX series is actually a compact digital camera with interchangeable lenses. So, what’s the difference anyways between a Digital SLR and a digital camera with interchangeable lens? Well, the difference is the same as with an ordinary compact camera.

Major differences include: manual controls for DSLR while compact cameras have limited manual controls; in DSLRs, what you see in the viewfinder is the actual lens while digital compacts have a separate viewfinder from the Lens; DLSRs are generally more bulky than compact digital cameras.

Now for the Sony a NEX series, although it has an interchangeable lens, it’s still separate from the viewfinder but it can actually focus more quickly than digital SLR camera lenses, at least, according to Sony. The express purpose of the NEX lenses is to enable autofocus when shooting videos, something which most DSLRs still struggle with.

Well, whether it’s a digital compact camera or DSLR, compact cameras with interchangeable lenses should be added to the different camera buying guides around.

Sony HXR-NX5U

You know what’s making waves these days? Independent films. If you’re a budding director, why not make your first independent film in high definition with the Sony HXR-NX5U professional camcorder?

I myself own a Sony HD camcorder, it’s an old model, shoots in 1080i and uses Mini DV tape. The first time I’ve shot our vacation with my Sony HD cam and viewed it on our LCD TV, I was really amazed. If you think High Definition is overrated, think again. Once you go HD, you’ll never go back to watching plain old movies.

So, going back to the Sony HXR-NX5U, if I have around $4000 to spend, I’d probably buy this baby even if I’m not a professional director. It shoots in 1080i/1080p/720p AVCHD at 24Mbps, has a native 1080/24p, 720/60p Wide Angle 20x G-Lends, HDMI output, uses Memory stick Pro Duo and has a built-in GPS, though I don’t really know why you need a GPS for your camcorder.

Anyways, the videos taken with my old Sony HD camcorder is good enough for me so I bet the Sony HXR-NX5U shoots stunning HD videos. BHPhotovideo.com has the lowest price I’ve seen so far and I bet if you find coupons for BHphotovideo, you could bring the price of $3999 lower.

Must have HTC HD2 Accessories

Just bought a brand new HTC HD2 mobile phone? Can’t wait to take it out for a spin? Well, before using your HTC HD2, here are some of the must have HTC HD2 Accessories that you need to buy–or not, depending on how much you want to take extra care of your mobile phone.

HTC HD2 Cases

Let’s face it, this is the number one thing that most mobile phone users buy for their phones: a case, whether it’s a leather case with belt hoop or just a simple pouch, having a case for your mobile phone is a must unless you want it to mingle with the coins in your pocket or bag then you’ll have a scratched mobile phone in three days time. Scratches will decrease your phone’s resale value.

HTC HD2 Screen Protectors

I won’t say that this is a must have. I guess it would depend on how careful are you with your mobile phone. If you have long nails and are not too careful with the way you handle your phone, a screen protector is a must especially if you have a huge touchscreen like on the HD2. If you’re careful about putting back your phone on the phone case and not the kind of person who throws their mobile phone around, then you can probably make do without one.

Car Charger

Smartphones like the HTC HD2 with its 1GHz processor is a power hog so if you’re always using your phone for data, invest in a car charger as you’ll likely be charging on the go.

Earphones

Although the HTC HD2 comes with its one earphones, if you’re an audiophile or you just really like listening to music. Investing in a pair of good quality earphones is also a must.

Sell your phone or recycle it?

If you’re a mobile phone addict, chances are, you change mobile phones twice to thrice a year. The way technology is advancing today, a mobile phone is considered to be the latest if it’s not more than three month’s old. With all the mobile phones out in the market right now, one might wonder where all the old mobile phones go?

Well, most of them are probably on eBay, being bought by people in some countries wherein that particular mobile phone model has not been released. But for those mobile phones which are so dated, how will you ever get rid of them? Simple: phone recycling. A lot of website are offering to buy your mobile phones so that they could recycle it. You’ve probably seen these websites in the news. For mobile phone models which is more than four years old, mobile phone recycling is a good idea but if your mobile phone is only a few months old, even more than a year, the prices that these recycling websites offer a too cheap and you’re better off selling your phone on eBay.

So, to sell or to recycle? Rule of thumb: Less than a year old (from date of manufacturing): Definitely sell on eBay. 2-3 years old: Search on eBay if there are similar phones being sold, if not, don’t waste your money on listing fees and go directly to websites offering to buy your phone. More than 3 years: Go straight to phone recycling websites.

HTC Desire now shipping in the UK

It seems that the HTC Desire is now being shipped by T-Mobile UK to some lucky, early customers who’ve ordered. Some retailers such as clove are reporting slight delays in the shipment but rest assured that almost all of them will have the HTC desire available by the second week of April.

If you’re in the UK and you’re looking for HTC Desire Deals from the major wireless carriers, it’s T-Mobile who seems to be offering the best deals for the Desire, putting in Flexible Booster plus unlimited internet (3GB cap). If you’re looking for the HTC Desire from retailers because you want a mobile phone with free gifts, mobiles.co.uk and buymobilephones.net have the HTC Desire on contract with different gifts for you to choose.

Here in the US, there’s no word as to which carrier will get the Desire considering that its twin, the Google Nexus One will soon be available on all four major networks, Google probably wouldn’t let HTC steal their thunder.

Web Hosting for less than $10 a year?

I’ve been hosting this blog on a free web hosting site for almost a year now. I’m not complaining I mean, it’s free and it’s not like I’m heating up their servers because of my visitors but lately I’ve been thinking of moving to a paid hosting service. There are a lot of websites offering cheap hosting most of them are under $5 a month and their offers are pretty standard like free domain and unlimited bandwidth. Still five bucks is five bucks and when you add that up to 1 year, it’s $60 per year.

Siteground.com is offering Hosting for less than $10/year. Now $10 bucks for 1 year?! That got me interested but when I went over to their website, it’s $3.95 per month regardless of how many months you signed up for. Maybe they’ll apply the discount on checkout? I have to investigate further. I’ll get back to you once I’ve confirmed if this is indeed $10 per year.
